INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

I Editing Policy

The Journal Psicologia: Teoria e Prática from the Curso de Psicologia of the Centro de Ciências Biológicas e da Saúde and from the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Distúrbios do Desenvolvimento from the Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie is a vehicle of scientific diffusiveness which has its main objective based on publishing inedited works in Psychology and similar areas. The articles to be published may be of Theory Reviews, Clinical Case Presentations and Original Articles. May be submitted Bibliographic essays and Brief reports about original articles as well.

It is a semestral Journal which adopts the following standards (according to the ABNT – The Brazilian Association of Technical Standards): - for the presentation of originals, (NBR 6023: 2002); - for the presentations of theory publication articles (NBR 6032: 1989); - for references (NBR 10520: 2002); - for quotations in the documents (NBR 10520: 2002).

II Procedures from our Editing Council

All articles sent to the Journal will go through the following procedures:

2.1 Communication to the author about the receiving (by e-mail and in one (1) week time). The First evaluation of the manuscript done by the Editor, referents to the suitability of the article to the Publishing Standards. If the manuscript is considered potentially publishable, it will be sent for two (2) consultants Ad-Hoc.

2.2 Sending of the manuscript so that evaluations can be made by two (2) consultants/members of the Editing/ Scientific Council. The consultants are chosen according to their studying area and the kind of work to be evaluated. The evaluation process by pairs uses the blind review criterium. When there is a disagreement between the consultants evaluations, which means, if one of them accepts it and another refuses it, the article will be sent to the arbitration of an external Ad-Hoc Journal’s consultant.

2.3 Emission of opinions by Journal’s consultants can be divided into: - acceptance of the article; - recommendation of the article with changes; - refusal of the publication of the article. In each and every case all the authors will be notified concerning the suggestions within fifteen (15) days maximum. When the authors have to make changes on the works, these will have to be made within thirty (30) day. The refused articles may be re-sent to the Journal since they have been completely reformulated. Whenever this happens, the authors must submit the article as done previously (following the same procedures for submitting the article including, once again, a letter explaining the sending to our journal and transferring all the rights to the Revista Psicologia: Teoria e Prática). The final version of the article, according to the changes recommended by our consultants, will be evaluated by our main Editor, who will make the final decision about the publication or request for new changes.

2.4 When the article is accepted for publication, to the Editor is reserved the right to introduce little changes according to our standards. The authors will be consulted about this changes.

2.5 Communications to all the authors concerning the decision for publishing the article (the possible date for publication, edition and the corresponding number of the journal only in the electronic version).

III Submitting the article

The steps of the editing process are the following:

3.1 For the article to be submitted to our publishing evaluation, it must be sent by regular mail to the journal’s address.

3.2 The sent articles must be constituted of three (3) printed copies and one (1) in an electronic version (computer disk or CD) with all the files containing exactly the same information from the printed versions, all according to our publishing standards.

3.3 Along with the article a letter explaining your forwarding must be sent to the Editor, signed by each author, authorizing the editing process of the article and transferring all the rights to the Revista Psicologia: Teoria e Prática.

3.4 Each article must by written by six (6) authors maximum.

3.5 When it comes to research with human beings, the author(s) must present an Ethics Committee Document, with the positive evaluation of the project from the Institution where the research was taken place.

5.5.15 References: - the references must be listed in an author’s last name alphabetic order. The work done by only one author, with more than one quotation, must be organized by the year of the publication (from the oldest to the newest). For the procedures of the ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards) regulations, we bring the examples bellow:

Examples of quotations in the body of the text, based on the guide for students of Mackenzie University as well as the ABNT regulations

1 QUOTATION

It is the mention, in the text, of a information extracted from other source. The author uses an original text to extract the quotation, being reproduced literally (direct, literal or textual quotation), interpreted, summarized, or translated (indirect or free quotation), or being an information extracted from an intermediate source (quotation of another quotation).

1.1 Direct, literal or textual quotations.

These are literal transcriptions extracted from the consulted text, respecting all formal characteristics related to the original writing.

Part of the transcribed text may be omitted through the usage of this punctuation: […], but at the end of the extract, one must indicate where the quotation has been extracted from.

The quotation in the text is transcribed between double quotation marks, and when it is a small part, of until three lines, it must be in the body of the paragraph.

Example: There are the place where one was born, the place where one came from, the place where one works, lives etc. “The place in which it is completed, by speech, the allusive trade of some passwords, with the connivance and the accomplice intimacy of the speakers” (AUGÉ, 1994, p. 73). To sum up, a place may be symbolized.

When the name of the quoted author(s) or the title(s) of the referenced work is (are) included in the sentence, only the date and the page(s) are included between parenthesis.

Example: To Romberg (1992, p. 51), the word ‘research’ refers to processes — things that make themselves and not objects that can be touched and seen. Besides, he claims: “Doing research can not be seen as a mechanic performance or a set of activities that the individuals follow on a prescribed or predetermined way.”

In the first example of the item 1.1, notice that, when the author’s last name is between parenthesis, it must be written in capital letters - (AUGÉ, 1994, p. 73).

In the second example of the same item 1.1, notice that, when the author’s last name is outside the parenthesis, it must be written normally – Romberg (1992, p. 51).

A longer quotation — with more than three lines — is presented in an isolated paragraph, taking the margin 4 cm to the left, with a smaller letter (font 10), single spacing, without quotation marks, using, as its limit, the right margin of the work.

Example: According to Onuchic (1999, p. 187):

No intervention in the learning process can make more difference than a well graduated, intelligent and able teacher. Investing in the teaching quality is what matters. The teacher preparation has a direct effect on the students […].

1.1.2 Indirect or free quotations

These are reproduction of somebody else’s ideas without any literal transcription of the used words. Although they are free, they must be faithful to the meaning of the original text. They don’t need to be written between quotations.

Example: According to Bartoletti (1990), there is no correlation between the results of the tests of toxity with Daphnia similis and the results of the physical-chemical normally used on the characterization of factory influence.

To quote a work with two or three authors, each one must be indicated, separated by semi-colon, followed by the publication date.

Example: Verifying the nature of some chemical products, even in low levels of concentration in the water, might be swallowed by water organisms that are eaten by predators, bio-accumulating on their body tissues, representing potential risk to men, as well as to birds and other animals which eat fish. (MACKENTHUN; BREGMAN, 1991).

1.1.3 Quotating Quotations

When the author doesn’t use the original text, but a quotation taken from a consulted work, the quotation might be reproduced literally, or be interpreted, summarized or translated. This kind of quotation must be avoided, because the actual book hasn’t been consulted and there is the risk of the quotation be interpreted wrongly.

In this case, the Latin expression apud is used, followed by the indication of the source effectively consulted, and the dates of the original document must be mentioned in note foot.
