  • A same first author's works, but different joint authors, are ordered by the joint authors' surnames.
  • Works with the same multiple authorships are ordered by date, the oldest comes first.
  • Works with the same authorship and the same date are ordered alphabetically by the title, disregarding the first word if this is an article or pronoun, except when the title has order indication.
  • In case of more than a work of the same authors and year, this is followed immediately by small letter.
  • When the same author is repeated, its name should not be replaced by dash or other signs.

For definition of other reference characteristics, APA Manual of Publication should be consulted.

9.1. Common kinds of citation

a) Citations of article with multiple authorships

Two authors: the authors' surnames are written in all citations. For instance:
Those attributes are called risk factors (Ramey & Finkelstein, 1981), but ...
Ramey & Finkelstein (1981) denominate those attributes as risk factors.

From three to five authors: all authors' surnames are indicated in the first citation, as following. From second citation on, only the first author's name is indicated, following by "and cols." as well as the year, if it is the first reference citation in a same paragraph. For instance:
Blechman, Kotanchi & Taylor (1981) have verified ... [first text citation].
Blechman and cols. (1981) have verified ... [subsequent citation, first in the paragraph].
Blechman and cols. have verified ... [Omit year in subsequent citations inside the same paragraph].

If abbreviated form generates apparent identification of two works in which the joint authors differ, the joint authors' sequence is explicit until the ambiguity is eliminated. In Reference section all names are listed.

Six or more authors: since the first citation in the text, only the first author's surname is mentioned, following by "and cols.", except in cases this generates ambiguity. In such a case the same indicated rule in previous item is applied. In the Reference section all names are listed.

b) Citations of work discussed in a secondary source

When the original work was not read, it should be avoided, and it goes referred by another source, it comes in original author's text following by a bracket in which read author is referred, preceded by "mentioned for" expression. For instance: Silva (mentioned by Souza, 1969). In Reference section just the secondary source is listed.

c) Citations of republished old works

In the text, the dates of original publication and consulted edition should be presented in this order, and separate for bar.

d) Citations of personal communication

This kin of citation should be avoided. If inevitable, it should appear in the text, but not in the reference section: afterwards author's name, in brackets, communication date should be indicated preceded of "personal communication" expression. For instance: Silva (personal communication, June 20th, 1996).

e) Work citations in printing press
